BIRTH TRUST: How do I register a birth? You must register the birth within 3 days of the birth of your baby.

How do I register a birth?

You must register the birth within 3 days of the birth of your baby. You do this in the municipality where your child was born. After the declaration, the registrar of births, marriages and deaths issues a birth certificate.

Register a birth within 3 days

You must register the birth of the child within 3 days after the delivery. The day of birth does not count.

Does the period of 3 days end on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday? Then you will have at least 2 working days longer to register a birth.

Are you late with the declaration? Then the registrar of births, deaths and marriages reports this to the Public Prosecution Service. You can be fined.

On which day to file a declaration?
Child born on: Make a declaration no later than:
Monday Thursday
Tuesday Friday
Wednesday Monday
Thursday Monday
Friday Tuesday
Friday (and Monday is a public holiday) Wednesday
Saturday Tuesday
Sunday Wednesday

Who can register a birth

The child's father or duo mother must register the birth. The mother from whom the child was born may file a declaration, but this is not mandatory.

If the father, duo-mother or mother cannot make a declaration, the declaration must be made by:

  • someone who was present at birth, or:
  • the owner of the house in which the child was born, or:
  • an employee of the institution where the child was born (for example, the hospital).

None of these persons register a birth? Then the declaration is made by or on behalf of the mayor of the municipality where the child was born.

You do not have to bring the baby with you when you register a birth.

Required documents

You need a valid proof of identity to register a birth.

Was recognition or name choice made before birth? Then you must bring the certificate with you when you register a birth. The details of that certificate will be included in the birth certificate.

In general, the hospital or midwife issues a birth certificate. It is useful to have this statement with you when registering a birth. But that is not mandatory.

Birth certificate upon birth registration

A birth certificate is drawn up of the birth registration. It states:

  • the details of the child (names, date of birth, place of birth and time of birth); and
  • the details of the parent (s).

The birth certificate is the official document that serves as proof of the birth and parentage of the child from the parent (s).

No birth registration costs

Registering a birth costs nothing. You do have to pay if you want a copy (official copy) of the birth certificate.
