We always recommend running a 12V battery and not using the DC/DC as your only 12V supply and leaving it on all the time, also an additional (ignition switched) 12V contactor on the input side is recommended to switch high voltage power on and off to the DC/DC converter to ensure it gets disconnected when the ignition is turned off.
A fuse should be installed as close to the positive source as possible of the high voltage battery (600V - 5A Fuse). There will need to be one on the output positive side of the DC/DC to the 12V battery (12V - 40A Fuse), and one as close to the positive terminal of the 12V battery as well (12V - 40A Fuse) to protect against a short in either direction.
Wiring:
Red & Yellow: Load side of the contactor that gets fed from the positive terminal of the high voltage battery.
Black: Negative side of the high voltage battery or commonly to the load side of the shunt which is usually found on the negative loop.
Blue: 12V Battery negative terminal.
Green: 12V Battery positive terminal.

Manual locking disconnect for your traction battery pack, very positive engagements and has a rating of 1000V at 400 amps continuous. This switch can withstand current as high as 2000 amps for 1 minute so this should work for just about any motor and controller combo we sell here at EV West. This switch is intended to be used as a periodic maintenance switch, and daily switching and emergency cut off should be performed by contactors, or switches with a higher break current rating.

This GV200MA-1 contactor from Gigavac is an amazing replacement to the Tyco EV200 workhorse of the EV industry. Gigavac took the compact size of the EV200 form factor, but improved its quality by adding a ceramic enclosure for the contact points. This internal ceramic seal allowed Gigavac to include the economizer circuitry inside the contactor, being completely sealed from the elements, and can withstand pressure washing at over 2000 psi. This is an incredible improvement to the external economizer that is open to the elements on other versions of the EV contactor. This setup is rated at an astonishing 4000 peak amps, and can withstand 3000 amps for periods up to 60 seconds, and will handle a continuous 500 amps. These are incredible numbers for a very affordable contactor.

These used 18650 Tesla battery modules from a 85kWh Model S. These are currently the best battery on the market for energy density, allowing many classic conversions to get well over 200 miles per charge. Model S modules are comprised of 3400mAh cells arranged in a 74p6s configuration. They are rated at 500 amps, 750 amps peak. They have an integrated liquid cooling/heating system, but they can also be air cooled in light duty cycle applications.
